The National Lakeshore of Sleeping Bear Dunes consists primarily of a 35-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline, featuring immense sand dunes rising as high as 460 feet above the lake, sculpted entirely by the winds and waters. Round trip from the parking area to the Lake Michigan shoreline is about 3.5 miles. That may not seem like a long way but you are also hiking up and down fairly steep terrain. Wear shoes because some days the sand can get pretty hot. Figure on three hours round trip with a nice relaxing stop at the halfway point which is the beach of Lake Michigan. Take plenty of water and a picnic lunch for an invigorating hike.
I went there when I was around 18 with the family. Bring water! The water is much much much farther than it looks. I swear I about passed out from dehydration on my way back. I had to stop a family and ask if they had any water. The dad had a bottle for me. D:
