www.excelphysicaltherapy.com- Physical therapists have long used 'stretching' as a key component in exercise programs. The classic passive stretch has involved getting into position and holding the stretch for 30 seconds, repeating 3 times. However, that way of stretching does not apply to all populations, especially the more athletic or active population.

We are finding much more success teaching an Active Dynamic Warm-up also known as Dynamic Stretching.

What's the difference?

In a sustained, passive stretch one is looking to change muscle length/stiffness which is not the most appropriate technique to use before engaging in a sport such as running, cycling or swimming! Dynamic Stretching encourages you to contract muscle groups throughout their range while challenging your neuromuscular system (balance).

This type of stretching primes your muscles for performance by replicating the motions that will be used during training. It is much more sport specific and effective in
comparison to the classic way of stretching.

Warming up and stretching are key components to injury prevention, but are often cut out of training due to time constraints. Active Dynamic Warm-up exercises consists of multiple joint stretching which elevates your heart rate and gets the blood pumping. Instead of warming up for 5-10 minutes before training and stretching for 5-10 minutes after, this allows you to get both components in at one time!
