The Canadian Staff Band - November 20 2010 Playing "Deep Harmony" by Marcus Venables. Bandmaster John Lam.
The piece begins with a fanfare celebrating the new Christian's
decision to follow Jesus. But this celebration is shortlived, as the
individual goes out to face the world. Yet there is still the voice of
comfort and confidence for the Christian, as depicted in the short
euphonium solo.
The new Christian then enters the world. Here he is surrounded by the
ungodly forces at work in the world. The music is at this point quite
quick and sinister. It depicts the materialistic, violent age in which
the Christian finds himself. Where the pleasures of man shut out
the righteousness of God. As the Christian goes on further and
further, his confidence starts to wane, and his faith is diminished.
The Chrisitian finds himself like a ship tossed about by the waves,
and soon is exhausted from the struggle.
Broken and battered, the Christian seeks shelter and rest. It is in
this quiet moment that he takes a moment to reflect on where he has
come from, and what he has been through. This turns his attention back
to the cross of Jesus at letter L, and the love that was displayed
there (S.B. 136 When I Survey the Wonderous Cross). The Christian
finds strength and confidence in his call and sets off back into the
world.
As he enters into the world, the Christian finds himself back in the
realm of the godless. But this time he is not overwhelmed. The
Christian keeps his gave firmly fixed on Jesus and the cross, giving
him the strength needed to repel the attacks of the enemy. And with
this love and power that comes from following Christ, the Christian
emerges this time victorious in the righteousness of Jesus and the
cross.
