A state proposal to adjust the budget for the Department of Correctional Facilities would reduce correctional officer positions by about one percent.

Republican candidate David Renzi said this move will have a negative effect on North Country prisons, like those in Watertown and Ogdensburg. Incumbent Senator Darrel Aubertine says the jobs aren't being cut. Instead they'll be reduced by attrition and redeployment and he believes the changes will fit the state's needs.

"The labor force themselves, they aren't opposed to this and in these tough times, clearly we need to be taking a look at where we can save revenue, save tax dollars. And that's what this proposal from the department of corrections would do," said Aubertine.
