Friction occurs between the BOTTOM of the stick and the

wood base. Charles is not rubbing the mid section- the midsection is

held by a piece of rope wrapped around ithe string. Watch again.

Excellent points. I agree. You could also tell those people you do it because "it's cool, I can, and it's a useful form of entertainment, unlike other activities like watching sitcoms and reality shows, playing fantasy computer games, etc....

I do a lot of primitive fire stuff and people always ask "why?" "Why not" I reply. I see lots of people camping that can't get a fire going even with gasoline and newspaper. I believe it teaches you basic skills about tinder, the right kind of wood, and how to prepare it. It's a good thing to know if your a hiker, rafter, or outdoorsy person al together
