Reading & Northern 425 powered the "Lehigh Rambler", a National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) Convention Trip which took riders from Duryea, Pennsylvania over former DL&W, Lehigh Valley, and CNJ lines to Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania. After a two hour layover, including an engine turntable move, the train continued south to Port Clinton Pennsylvania over former Reading Company lines. The entire route operated on track belonging to the Reading & Northern, a highly successful regional carrier with over 300 network miles, and headquartered in Port Clinton.
The excursion was pulled by # 425, a 4-6-2 Pacific, built in 1928 by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. The engine is owned by Andy Muller of the Reading & Northern, and it was restored to operating condition in 2007.
Our DVD, "Pennsylvania Steam Stories", begins the day before the trip at Jim Thorpe, where we see last minute preparations as 425 heads to Duryea. We cover the entire one-way convention trip, with lots of action at Jim Thorpe where the engine took a spin on the tractor powered turntable, and was serviced before leaving for Port Clinton. Multiple cameras enable you to see the action from different perspectives.
The Lehigh Rambler is one of four chapters on Pennsylvania Steam Stories.
