This short clip shows our Earthquake Shake Table in action. The shake table is an interactive exhibit at Liberty Science Center. Visitors build structures and then select recordings of actual earthquakes to test their structures. An accelerometer can be attached to any point in the structure to measure acceleration in two axes. A video camera captures what happens for later analysis. This video shows a relatively mild earthquake that does not damage the structure, then a more severe earthquake that flattens it.

  • The accelerometer is attached to a small plastic clip so it can be attached to any part of the structure. The challenge was making its mass sufficiently small so that it did not affect the performance of the structure.

  • Hi, I just wondered how you graph the accelerations on the screen? Did you use an accelerometer? if so where did you place it? on the base? Thank you!
