A short ride on the ZVTM AB8, a beautifully restored 2 bogie coach that began it's service in 1916 in the far south-west part of the Netherlands on a meter-gauge steam tram network. In 1946 it was taken out of service and was used first for housing and then as a shed, until it was scouted and brought to Hoorn for restauration, for service at the steam tram in Hoorn, the Netherlands, now on the normal gauge heritage railway.
When these shots were taken, the AB8 had just been finished, but the steam heating had to be damped out in order to remove smelly paint residues. While steam loco 30 served for an excursion with the boys on the loco, the AB8 was taken along with working steam heating the warm weather allowing for open doors to let the heat out together with the paint damp.
Notice the beautiful varnished woodwork and brass and bronze levers.
The loco has number 30 and was in service until 1966 at the Rotterdam gas works. It was built in 1908 by Jung.
The SHM in Hoorn operates heritage local trains, but steam trams as well on it's line to Medemblik. The steam trams would run alongside roads but would not avoid towns and villages, instead they would run through the streets sharing the space with all other traffic. In the early steam tram years, ranging from 1870 to about 1920, the driving shafts and pistons had to be covered inside boxes built around the loco's to prevent hands, limbs or tails to become injured. In later years the open loco's like this one became more apparent.
On re-entry to the platform a local train consisting of Swiss/Austrian open balcony vans and some lorries for bicycles stand ready for departure to Medemblik behind loco 5
It seems like I find train videos no matter what I look up.. Good thing I'm a railfan.
