I recorded this at Ridge Soaring near Julian, PA on a day when I couldn't fly sailplanes due to the weather.

Here is the basic tab. I just figured out which chords I liked by ear.

This is widely considered to be one of the greatest military songs ever written. Here is a capsule history from 1896. (You will have to sign in to the New York Times to read it).

By George F. Root, 1861

Yes we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom,
We will rally from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

(Chorus)
The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

We are springing to the call of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we'll fill our vacant ranks with a million free men more,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

Chorus

We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And although he may be poor, not a man shall be a slave,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

Chorus

So we're springing to the call from the East and from the West,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we'll hurl the rebel crew from the land we love best,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

  • beautiful!!!

  • Thanks!

  • what did you tune it to for this song?

  • I had to get the dulcimer out and play along with the video to make sure. This one is standard DAd. I often tune this instrument to anywhere between B and E flat, though. Thanks for watching, and for the fav.

  • Very good job!

  • Thank you! (and sorry to be so late in saying so)

  • How do you decided which direction and finger you are strumming in and with? Is it for certain combinations of strings you want strummed together or in sequence? Lovely arrangement.
