Sure, there are more techniques/tones you can do sans-pick, but there are also some techniques/tones you can only get with a pick. Preference buddy, preference.

Dee Dee was an idiot because he used a pick no one could ever play an old blues bassists lines

with a pick some played with he isn't a real bassist because of it if you want a real bassist listen to geddy lee or Tommy shannon although they did bring heart there isn't much technique
