Bogurodzica (The Mother of God), is the oldest Polish religious hymn in the Polish language. It was composed somewhere between the 10th and 13th centuries. The origin of the song is not clear. The melody is written in a manuscript in the 12th century.
Polish knights sang it as an anthem before the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 against the Teutonic knights and during the battle with the Turkish army at Varna in 1444.
Bogurodzica also accompanied the coronation ceremonies of the first Jagiellonian kings.
The words in Polish:
Bogurodzica, dziewica, Bogiem sławiena Maryja,
Twego syna, Gospodzina, matko zwolena Maryja,
Zyszczy nam, spuści nam.
Kyrieleison.
Twego dziela krzciciela, Bożyce,
Usłysz głosy, napełń myśli człowiecze.
Słysz modlitwę, jąż nosimy,
A dać raczy, jegoż prosimy,
A na świecie zbożny pobyt,
Po żywocie rajski przebyt.
Kyrieleison.
The meaning in English:
Mother of God, Virgin, by God glorified Mary,
From your son, our Lord, chosen mother, Mary!
Win over for us, send to us.
Kyrie Eleison.
Son of God, for the sake of your Baptist,
Hear our voices, fulfill man's intentions.
Hearken to the prayer that we offer,
And deign to give us what we ask for:
On earth, a pious sojourn,
After life, heavenly residence.
Kyrie Eleison.
This is dedicated to Agnieszka Obidzinska and Magdalena Gdanska who helped me pronounce Polish. It is not a language I speak. So any mistakes are mine alone.
Performed at the East Kingdom Bardic Champions Competition as my first piece, on Feb 20, A.S. XLIV (44) the Year of our Lord 2010.
Mi to obojętnie, ale jeśli kult maryjny to pogaństwo, to jesteś potomkiem pogan.
