The Allegory of the Cave is an allegory used by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work The Republic. The allegory of the cave is told as a fictional dialog between Plato's teacher Socrates, and his own brother, Glaucon, at the beginning of Book 7 (514a520a). It is related to Plato's metaphor of the sun (507b509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d513e) which immediately precede it at the end of Book 6. Allegories are summarized in the viewpoint of dialectic at the end of book VII and VIII (531d-534e). The allegory of the cave is also commonly known as Myth of the Cave, Metaphor of the Cave, The Theory of Forms, or the Parable of the Cave.

  • Holy crap! The cave allegory is NOT about TV or anything like that. Get acquainted with the basics of Plato's philosophy before making a video. The cave allegory is about rational thought and how the world that we live in is not as "real" as the world of the forms; only someone who uses reason can transcend the "divided line".

    The cave=this world

    Above-ground=the realm of the forms

Shadows=sense perceptions which are not analyzed by reason

    The sun=the Good

    Objects above-ground=the forms

  • this is eye opening in so many ways , first time ive heard it .

  • @dmac14af THANK YOU!

  • Remember the difference between "being" and "becoming", which is essential to Plato's philosophy and to this allegory. Reread the beginning of Timaeus and what comes immediately after this allegory in the Republic.

  • This is a very good video. Thanks for posting it. Tack, tack. (thanks in Swedish)

  • This sounds like a comparison between those who are initiated in the Egyptian mystery school theology and those who live in darkness and labeled as profane.

Illumination is having your eyes opened to reality and those who stay in the cave, your normal people think they knw whats going on but all they can do is give names to the things they dont understand or are unable to see.
