There is one day in China that you can get a bowl of yummy porridge for free. That is the Laba Festival. Yonghegong Lama Temple is a typical place in Beijing to do so.

In Qing Dynasty, this lama temple produced porridge for buddhas and the emperor. Meanwhile, they give away some porridge free of charge for the poor people or beggers.

Nowadays people travel 3 or 4 hours to get the temple in the early morning, waiting for the porridge - not because that they can't afford it, but for blessings.
