Rangers were taken to a replay by St Johnstone before they won through 4-0 in a Scottish Cup tie at Parkhead. The first tie played on the 15th April 1989 ended in a dull 0-0 draw but the replay three days later ended in a convincing win. Mark Walters scored an early goal and Gary Stevens volleyed in a second just before half-time. Kevin Drinkell sealed the win just after the break before Ally McCoist finally got his goal after an hour of trying. It was Rangers third replay of the season after drawing in earlier rounds against Raith Rovers and Dundee United.
The black armbands that were worn in the second match were in tribute to the Hillsborough Disaster that had happened the previous Saturday.
I wonder how many Rangers fans knew Kevin Drinkell was gay?

was at this game, a fantastic atmosphere, amazingly Derek Ferguson was dropped in favour of Mel Sterand, in case Mr souness dosent know what a hammer thrower is , it was Mel, in the replay Derek was back and the brave Saints were hammered... but done the city of Perth proud

That 0-0 draw was going on as Hillsborough was happening, never forget listening to the game on the radio then hearing about what was happening in Sheffield.
Amazing to see the overcrowding behind the goal in this game also, an eerie spectacle on that day.
