This was programed after dynamic bench presses with chains. They worked up to top weight for 5 sets of 5. This is a tricep and lockout building movement. The soft board takes the strain off the elbows.
The point of lowering to highering (eccentric to concentric) is where the muscles get their greatest stress. The board moves that point up slightly and allows the benching muscle to strengthen throughout the entire range of motion.
They work the higher portion of the rep range. Raw benchers usually falter at the bottom of the lift, at their chest. But in most powerlifting meets the shirt helps the benchers rebound and it is the top portion of the lift that peters out for them. By using boards of varying thickness the PLers can work on a specific range and get stronger in it.
