Online gambling as a sector was worth €6 bn in 2008 but by 2013 this figure is expected to double. It's a rapidly growing part of the wider gambling industry, which is worth around €80 bn and employs hundreds of thousands of people. However, at the moment online gambling is regulated largely at Member State level, with different rules and barriers for entry applying in different countries. Nevertheless, the European Commission released a green paper earlier in 2011 focusing on future regulatory developments in this sector and the European parliament has recently responded to the Commission with its own report on how to support this burgeoning industry.
