That's you by Nat King Cole played on a 1955 Wurlitzer model 1800. This is the 3rd of 4 jukeboxes I have. This jukebox was in very clean condition inside and out when I purchased it many years ago. It is still original with it's Zenith Cobra cartridge, which I do not like. All of my other Wurlitzers have been upgraded to magnetic for better sound and protection of the records. The 1800 tonearm is narrow has a different design from my other Wurlitzers and does not provide an easy change of cartridge without modifying the tonearm so I leave it as is due to the high value of this model Wurlitzer. Recommended on line radio station for classic Ameircan music from 1920'2 to 1980'shttp://www.krli.net/

  • typical cobra crapiness...i suffer the same prob. I know you have other box's you've done the magnetic conversion..can you give me a quick rundown on the best way to do it?

  • @ishredu I can give you a little help on this but I would have to know what type of Wurlitzer you have. I have worked this Cobra over to get it sound as good as it does. The Wurlitzer 2000 and 1900 I have posted use upgraded Pickering Stereo cartridges. The problem is the Cobra is not really a typical cartridge so much as it is a little frequency transmitter which is a problem all its own. Send me a PM

  • Why don't you like the Cobra cartridge?? It sounds great to me! I love the Zenith Cobra record palyers, I have about 6 of them in different colored tonearms. They are primarily the portables. One is a console with a black tonearm from 1956.

  • The Cobra was primarily a 1940's design for 78 records. Even fitted with a 7 mil dia stylus for 33 and 45 the stylus lacks compliance, poor fidelity, and is hard on the records. It actually is not a typical cartridge design. It is only a small coil of wire with a thin piece of tin connecting the stylus with a white substance to tone down the tinny sound. Sometimes this dries out with age and has to be replaced to reduce the tinny sound it develops. The other jukeboxes posted have magnetic

  • I have heard later model Zenith Cobra cartridges that don't sound too bad. They also sounded ok in some Zenith 78 record players. The Wurlitzer uses the early design and with its wide range amplifier shows up more flaws with the Cobra sound. There is a company that is remanufacturing the Cobra, and it is suppose to be better quality.
