@innit27 Since when was the former Hearts, Chelsea & Dundee United midfielder, Eamonn Bannon, a striker? On the theme of strikers, like Maurice Johnston, Ally McCoist, and John Robertson were also not picked but who are we to argue with Alex Ferguson? It is notable Fergie doesn't talk about Scotland much when discussing his managerial career.
@supahdupahguy81 Qualification rate is your criteria, but it's not the only one. I think you'd have to look at how the Scotch performed after qualification -amount of quarter finals, semis, finals - that sort of thing. Also with its c.50 year head start on other teams you would expect them to do a lot better than just qualify. Hopeless now, perennial underachievers then, this is not xenophobia, it's cold hard fact. After 150 years of football Scotland are currently worse than Armenia and Iran
I said "considering their size, THEIR QUALIFICATION RATE"....i didn't say Scotland were the best fucking team on the planet did i.....of course Uruguay & arguably Denmark would be ahead....but out of 33 international tournaments from 1930 until 2011, Scotland have qualified 11 times, that's more than Ireland & Croatia put together.
BTW i'm not Scottish, only half Scottish & was born & raised in South London....i just object to uninformed, xenophobic bullshit thats all...
@supahdupahguy81 No you couldn't. Uruguay has won two world cups with a population nearly half yours and is currently 4th in the FIFA rankings. Denmark, same populations has won a Euro Cup and is currently 11th with FIFA. Other teams of similar size are Croatia (currently 8th), Switzerland (17th), Ireland (21st)...the list goes on and on until you get to Scotch-land at position 49! And look at the years and years of a head start you had over all these teams.
You could argue considering their size, their qualification rate generally throughout their history makes them one of the more successful teams in international football...
@iguanna41 Well said. Scotland are probably the worst team in the history of international football when you consider how old they are as a footballing country.
they needed dalglish who was injured and didnt go. they fucked up against uruguay. souness didnt play in that game.
scotland had a lot of strikers there who didnt cut it, nicholas, sharp, mcavennie, bannon ,sturrock, archibald.
Mo Johnston arguably their best striker wasnt taken to Mexico due to a drinking incident in run up to play-off v Australia. His goals would take Scotland to the 1990 world cup finals. 14 goals in 38 caps.
@innit27 He was the most centrally placed winger that I've ever seen play then

@mattleslie74 Bannon was a winger. If you look at the official squad list bannon is listed as a forward. Wingers are often listed as forwards.

@iguanna41 - It's hardly worth responding the utter drivel that pours out of you. Your own words show you up: neither funny or accurate.
