I was on a self-sponsored visa. I know others who've done it too. FIRST you need to get a visa that allows you to work, then prove that you can support yourself and show where your income is coming from. Then apply. It wasn't that hard. I've met rich guys who've come here to do work too and they've set up shop. Basically the rule in most countries is that if you've got enough investment $ you can set up shop.

I was allowed a one time, reentry pass that I was able to get at the airport. They said that they allow it only once per person though...kinda like as an emergency pass. (I didn't know either...)

@BlazinNSoul Haha I am responding to my own post lol. I didn't listen to the whole video and is why I have Christopher Johnson mentioned as well. Listen hard to say what the exact story was on this. Although to say this isn't an issue is a gross overstatement. Immigration is just one of many problems facing japan and will only get worse as time goes on. I have run into similar problems but being fluent in Japanese and knowing what steps to take beforehand is a must. Don't assume anything!!!

apparently they're scrapping it in june or july? I had to get one for my short trip back to england it cost me about 3000 yen! My visa itself only cost me 40 pounds (about 4500yen?) but luckily i get it all back from the UK government.

Strange stuff it's just money making surely.

Lots of countries do that, Canada included. My friend came here from Australia, he had to leave the country once per year for a weekend trip in order to stay in Canada.

Also there is a "Bust-a-illegal-gaijin"-hotlin­e in Japan. What is wrong with that, is that many people abuse it against legal gaijins and then the Immigration people might or might not come visit you in very rough manner (prepared for a fight). I'd just call a police if I saw a mob of Japanese men behind my door though :3

So many people exaggerate their negative experiences here in Japan to unbelievable extents. It's terrible. I agree that the Japanese Immigration System is corrupt and a scam. But, aren't they all? Instead of being a cooperative integrated international record keeping service of humanitarians as it was originally intended for the benefit of mankind as it advanced into the modern age of global transportation systems. In the years to come, I hope it does so. One Earth, no boundaries. Peace & Love.
