A demonstration in Beit Shemesh attracted thousands of Israelis who came to protest what they see as religious coercion by Ultra-Orthodox Haredi extremists. Israelis gathered in protest after an eight-year-old schoolgirl was spat on and called a prostitute repeatedly on her way to school. The Haredi extremists said the schoolgirls were not dressing modestly enough, however the girls were attending the religious Beit Orot school and wore long sleeves and long skirts. Many residents have called for the Beit Shemesh mayor to resign.

Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni says, "There's a battle of the values of the state of Israel as a Jewish democratic state. There is no need to choose Beitween being a Jewish state and a democracy. I believe those values are living in harmony. But there are those who try to impose on us their way of translating Judaism. But this is something we cannot accept."

Social media activist Ofer Berkowitz addressed the crowd, "Whoever spits on a little girl, spits on me and on all of you. They spit on the state of Israel and on the Israeli flag and on all of Israel's boys and girls."
