According to Gary Wills’ book “John Wayne’s America,” the man who portrayed the archetypal, battle-hardened Marine, Sgt. Stryker, in 1949’s “The Sands of Iwo Jima,” actually avoided the draft during WWII. Wills contends that the Duke did not reply to letters from the Selective Service system, and applied for deferments. Apparently, Wayne got his big break during the struggle against fascism when many Hollywood action heroes like Tyrone Power enlisted and shipped out overseas.

The ultimate chickenshit draft dodger. You poor fools that worship this hype need to have your heads examined.

John Wayne is the man!

@Donald6899 So anyone who's physically unable to "fight for his country" is a coward or un-American? You certainly DON'T have to go to war to be a hero or patriot. Many in the military will say exactly that in a heartbeat!

Above all else donald its Stewart James Stewart! I concur with the parson time to grow up!

@Donald6899 The only coward here would be someone who makes such a statement about a true America patriot, when he's no longer here to defend himself. God bless our true American patriot, John Wayne, and God bless America. This coming from ME, whose favorite alltime actor also was James Stewart, another great American patriot!

God I love America!
This is so awesome. Every word so true from such an American Patriot himself.
We have so much to be grateful for and need to thank God that we have the freedoms that we do. To our U S A Flag that shows and represents our country!
To our soldiers who show us their bravery each and everyday we give thanks.
God Bless Us All And The Ones Who Died Fighting For Our Freedoms We Thank
Them and their families For The Sacrafices That They Made And For The Loss Of Their Loved Ones God Bless America!!
