The Lullaby is an Opera Aria from The Consul written by Menotti
Translation: Menotti's painfully realistic opera The Consul was written in 1950, when the atrocities of World War II were fresh and the Cold War was a reality. Magda Sorrel is married to a political activist who is being pursued by the Secret Police. She goes daily to the Consulate to get papers so that she, her mother, and her baby son can cross the borders to relative freedom, but she is constantly refused. While she waits, day after day, her baby becomes seriously ill from cold and hunger. This lullaby is sung by Magda's mother, who is keeping watch over the infant
