The Lost Gospels, presented by Anglican priest Pete Owen Jones, is a fascinating exploration into the huge number of ancient Christian texts that didn't make it into the New Testament. Shocking and challenging, these were works in that presented a Jesus who didn't die, who took revenge on his enemies and who kissed Mary Magdalene on the mouth. This Jesus is unrecognisable from that found in the traditional books of the New Testament.

Pete travels through Egypt and the former Roman Empire looking at the emerging evidence of a Christian world that's very different from the one we know. He discovers that in addition to the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, there were over 70 gospels, acts, letters and apocalypses circulating in the early Church.

Through these lost Gospels, Owen Jones reconstructs the intense intellectual and political struggles for orthodoxy that were fought in the early centuries of Christianity, a battle involving different Christian sects, each convinced that their gospels were true and sacred.

The worldwide success of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code has sparked new interest about the origins of the Christian faith. Pete Owen Jones sets out the context in which heretical texts like the Gospel of Mary emerged. He also strikes a cautionary note: if these lost Gospels had been allowed to flourish, Christianity may well have faced an uncertain future, or perhaps not survived at all.

The documentary, although a great feat of scholarship falls short of exploring some other important manuscripts such as the Gospel of Judas and the Gospel of Barnabas. It also fails to eplore the evidences in the gospels of the other possibility of Christ's nature: that he was entirely human.

However, the question that really needs to be asked is: isn't God himself supposed to decide what comprises of his book?

  • @tjrxk7 Really? Did he not try to defend Christ with the sword? Did he not Have so much faith that he'd be Martyred for his faith.

  • @SonOfLight1979 True woman shouldn't be Priests and Pastors and such, but it mentions that Woman may teach. Look at Sunday school, Youth Groups, and other gatherings. Sure they aren't able to lead in Church, but they are able to lead elsewhere.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks of the Family) must have to supply for the needs of his family, in every walk. Be it wealth, food, shelter, love. The Wife tends to the Home, and the man must always be there for the family, No more of this 40% of Divorce rate bull.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks but in symbolic reference to the placement man has to God. Women were Cursed at the fall of man, as she was tricked first and brought to Adam. She was the first to "Humble" herself so she is said to have to Humble herself as an Image. Man is Cursed as well, he is cursed with the duty of having to be representative of the Family, he must labor for the Woman, (many lazy men FORCE careers on their wives) Man must labor with the cursed earth, and must (as leader)

  • @SonOfLight1979 St. Paul, your referring to the Catholic Bible right? Well, this conversation could be easily remedied if so. I read the King James Version, the one which many historians and ancient linguist translators refer to as one of the most perfectly interpreted versions, if not the best.

In Corinthians (Written By Paul) Women are mentioned as not speaking in Church, in addition they are to wear a "Covering" over their head (not the Muslim Burqua) Not in homage to Men..

  • @mina319 with respect, being the first born in a family is not the same as being the very first human on earth.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks I'm not saying women are not important. I'm saying from a bibical point of view men are far more important.

If women want jobs and a career then fine, but their main role is motherhood.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks What did St Paul say about women in churches? He said they shouldn't even be allowed to speak.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks If your a true man, be sure that your wife has enough so that she may never have to work hard. But she shouldn't just sit around, why not tend to the House? Tend to the Children? It never says that a man shouldn't, but a man should have to do the hard work so that his wife may never need to.

  • @theP3rSonhuRocks Women were not allowed to be witnesses. Man has played Woman as unimportant, but to God they are great. Never downplay them. Man is told to love his wife, as he loves the Lord. A man should never mistreat the Lord, then why would he do so to a woman. True, the woman should care for the Home, but is that a bad thing? First she births your child, then she has to go out and labor? No, the woman should never HAVE to work, not that she shouldn't.
