The tangram puzzle is made up of seven pieces: five triangles, a parallelogram, and a square. Most often a first encounter with the puzzle involves being presented with the seven pieces and being asked to put the, together to form a square. For some this turns out to be quite difficult and frustrating because there has been no opportunity to develop insight into how the pieces might fit together.
Folding and cutting a square to form the seven tangram pieces provides a great opportunity for students to review and use a number of geometric concepts and to use the vocabulary of geometry to describe shapes and relationships between shapes.
