Most old James Brown video was recorded on White 1960's TV shows, as America, was and remains a racist country. James Brown sold over a million Apollo Theatre, New York , tickets to mostly African Americans over the years. His "Fair Deal Productions" was started just to market himself to white audiances.
James Brown records would get rocked hard at house parties of that day as well. I can say with confidence that he was unargubly the most popular black performer in show business of that day. Before he was called the godfather of soul he was then known as Soul Brother Number One, and for good reason. If you are old enough to remember the popularity of M.C. Hammer of the late 80's you'd have to put an exponent of 20 to get a sense of just how exciting James Brown was in those days.
If you could go back in time (the 60's) and take a trip through the black neighborhoods of that day you would have heard James Brown vinyl records played daily. Blacks were and still are his core fan base. But in those days the networks were not putting many black teenagers on t.v. That era is known for its segregation, Subsequently besides radio stations that's how black artists promoted their records by appearing on the dance shows of the day. There were no black ones until 1970, soul train.
"Eyesight" is one of JB's best gems from the mid/late-'70s -- after a brief dry-spell. He does some amazing, awesome moves in this performance -- classic James Brown to Michael Jackson stuff.
It's amazing how James could capture and keep your attention by just standing at the mike. What presence. Hard to believe someone with such energy would ever die.
"Eyesight" is FUNKY AS FUNK !!!!
