When Obama met Ayers...
Bill Ayers was a professor of education at the University of Illinois, who had just helped the city secure a $50 million grant to improve secondary education in the region.
Ayers was supported by the city and the Chicago educational community in that effort.
Obama was appointed to chair a board overseeing that project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
That's the beginning of their "association".
