In October 1966 British Railways gave notice to close the waverley line from 2 January 1967. A brief reprieve was announced and the situation was on hold pending review, however on 15 July 1968 the then Minister for Transport, Richard Marsh, gave the final order that the line would close in January 1969. A huge public outcry ensued and there followed a high profile campaign to save the line. This ultimately was unsuccessful in preventing the closure.
