Well, I don't know what games you're referring to, but all games I play like counterstrike or combat arms all address me based on my character. I'm a female and whenever I play a female character, no one has ever questioned my 'real gender' or assumed I was a male. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that people base their assumptions on what they see on the screen and don't bother stopping to question the identity of the player behind the avatar.
That's curious~ when I play with rational adults I tend to see the opposite. Not sure what games your playing or the general age group of what you face, but you don't see this in top quality games, or mature communities. For as immature as a game like Warcraft is for instance, it's got a HUGE userbase of a large age-range. The odds of a female character being mistaken for a female in RL are low. I suppose in a game with young "cute" chars, like regular Mabinogi, it might be different.
Don't assume. I've played a lot of rpgs and sometimes I make characters of opposite genders and people right away address me according to the gender of my character. Also, people don't stop and think about what the person behind the screen is really like and just base their opinions on what they see, their avatars. I'm not saying that people say automatically that a person's character is the exact representation of the player, but people tend to treat them that way.
No, that's completely incorrect. Nobody above the age of 15 would ever assume that 3d pixels represent the person behind the screen. That's absolutely wishful thinking and really shows an inability to tell fantasy from reality. That's a trait children tend to grow out of.
That's true but when people look at your avatar, the first thing they tend to assume is that you're the same gender as it. Personally, I too enjoy making an avatar in my own gender as well.
@strikerk I understand your point of view on virtual games vs. reality is somewhat different than mine, but that doesn't mean that my eyes are clouded and I can't identify what's real and what's not. To me, and this is purely my own personal opinion, when I play an MMO, I enjoy feeling like my character is a virtual representation of myself, but obviously, not actually ME. It adds to my MMORPG experience. You may not feel the same way, but you should at least realize our different views.
Anyone who has played a video game before who is older than 13 knows that the avatars you see don't represent them. Most people know the difference between fantasy and reality dude. I don't know where you get this concept that they don't. Only children think that kind of stuff~ are you really concerned what kids think? I've played an assortment of female characters~ and the only time my real life gender comes into play is when I'm asked directly. Your avatar is a 3d model.
@strikerk I have played Final Fantasy XIII, and enjoyed it very much. That's a whole different story though, in a multiplayer game, I prefer making the character a representation of myself, the best I can. I just don't fancy the idea of people approaching me thinking I'm a girl until they begin calling me a 'she', and I correct them.
Do you even know what a pervert is? What happens when a guy picks a female in a fighting game? Or plays a female character in an action game? Are people who play Lightning in FFXIII? How about Metroid? They perverts too? You've got a fucked up head dude. How old are you for crying out loud? You talk like a 12 year old, insecure about who he is, and what the difference between real and fake is. I remember this kind of talk with Chun-li players in Street Fighter when I was a kid.
Um, males can be mages, you just have to play a female video game character. -_- You act like you've never played a female in a video game before. You that insecure?
