Time lapse Earthstar fungi splitting open and then rising off the forest floor.
It raises itself up so that the puff-ball is above the leaf litter and gets a better chance of being struck by raindrops which expels its spores.

Filmed in my studio using Nikon D300, 35mm and 55mm lens with studio flash. 20 minute interval.

  • To my knowledge, the spores that the fungi release are brown. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this!

  • @DeceasedCoob Yes, I think the mature spores are brown.

  • did you recorded this thing without removing the camera from that place

  • @harima500 I built a woodland set in my studio. I had the camera attached to a tripod to keep the camera in the same position.
