"I crawl right back into the sound. I take one breath and spiral down." - This part shows lack of fear and hesitance, while at the same time mentioning a growing flood which is mentioned as being threatening someone.
"And you, watching the road. Watching the flood-state rise. We are yearlings."
It makes me think about the patronizing way that a parent or guardian can look in on the struggles of their children. But reversed and with a taunting notion.

The unsettled, restless youth. Unaware that the dangers of their fathers will one day be their very own.
You're very close, the reference to "yearling" isn't horse necessarily but a young creature in general. Imo it means a frog or another amphibian.

@DonCanalie2006 Yearlings...means young horses....Often Shearwater uses animals and nature's images to describe a sort of inner way, a moment of life and so on...I suppose in this case they want to talk about a sort of desire to run, a lot of energy inside us, but difficulties...as to run in the water. difficult for horses ! ;) I don't know...It's just an idea...often a meaning song is a very personal question . :)
