"Wholy Holy" is a 1971 song written by Al Cleveland, Renaldo Benson and Marvin Gaye and issued by Marvin as the eighth track on his landmark album, What's Going On. Staying with the subject of love bringing Jesus into the theme, the song lyrically followed the same path of the Benson/Cleveland/Gaye compositions "What's Going On" and "Save the Children" while musically was a much more solemn production than the previous tune and featured Gaye on lead and background vocals. The song would be later covered by soul-gospel greats Aretha Franklin, who sung the song on her Amazing Grace live album and Mavis Staples, who famously covered it during an episode of The Cosby Show.

  • I remember listening to this song with a friend of mine who was depressed and going through the bad hands that life can deal us. We sat and wrote poetry that we recited with this song in the background. It was truly a display of human emotion and friendship at its most intense.

  • God I miss Marving Gaye!

  • Wow...Aretha Franklin's arrangement is totally different from Marvin's... However, I love Aretha's version of it tho.

  • I remember a "B" side that marvin sang.."God is my friend".....such a beautiful song.....check it out if you can find it. The 45 was stolen from me. I wish i could find it again. Can anyone send me an MP3 if you have it.......detroitspinner@yahoo.com.........Thanks.!

  • I defy the individual that can listen to this song and not be touched by it. Absolutely heart wrenching! It sends me into a melancholy that have the tears flowing. There's no doubt that God was speaking to Marvin when he recorded this most unbelievably emotional track. Between this and God is love (b side version), my going home music.

  • A song that will make the hardest man cry.....

  • cause we need strength and power Sing Marvin I still remember the day you died I was rollin down Van Ness with my goddaughter

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUL !

  • Beautiful-Thankyou.

  • There's only one Marvin Gaye.

  • I don't know now, @usmanioa is kinda on to something in my opinion. Though it is hard to compare one to a great like Marvin Gaye, the way John Legend composed and sung Wholy Holy was great in itself. (So I think @usmanioa isn't going to hell for implying that John Legend's version is possibly more likeable than Marvin's).

  • @sdwalm you are dammn rite ....
