This is what "meltingly beautiful" singing is, in my opinion. Allen sounds simply gorgeous and Cotrubas - well, as Allen says in the programme, referring to Germont, "he'd be a hard man if he were not moved by this". Pity they didn't do the complete duet (or the whole act...)
Ileana Cotrubas - Violetta
Thomas Allen - Germont
Stephen Oliver - piano
London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Atherton

Filmed in a television studio for a programme in the "Understanding Opera" series (written and presented by Stephen Oliver). LWT (London Weekend Television), early 1980s.

  • You're welcome! I wish I had seen them both in Eugene Onegin. A friend of mine did and says that the atmosphere was electric!

  • Lovely and emotionally powerful singing and acting from both Allen and Cotrubas...truly beautiful.

    Thanks for posting!

  • This may not be Contrubas' [sic] best singing, but I would be thrilled to experience singing as passionate and commited as she (and Allen) offer here. Plus, I didn't realize that mad women's jaws shook.

  • Gorgeous.

  • Contrubas' jaw is shaking about like a mad woman hear. Her tone isn't focussed at all.
