This voice has the combination of bright and dark timbres that the Italians would call chiaroscuro. Quite a sound!

@soundlogik He is not exactly the darkest tenor voice in history. The fact that he can handle this kind of tessitura without substantial damage to his voice for so many years speaks in his favor. Things work out very well. It would be very unfortunate to judge if someone is a tenor based on (preferred) aesthetics. That being said, he sometimes sounds throaty and a bit woofy. But many times he sounds f*ing fantastic, so I don't care too much.

A beautiful tenor voice here - dark or light, I don't care;

he sounds wonderful and is very expressive. Sings Strauss well.

I love this piece... but after hearing Ben Heppner's recording of this, I am just not digging this recording. Kaufmann makes this sound so HARD. It's clear that the dude is talented, but in my opinion (and you can take it or leave it as you wish), maybe he should check out some baritone repertoire.

This is a case of ego at its most unchecked and new-found power at its most abusing. Now that he is treading this particular genre, can the title role of Salome be that far away? By the way, this kind of strangulated, wringing the throat at all cost singing doesn't sit well with what Strauss had in mind when he wrote this masterpiece. God forbid he smears Strauss again.
