Some pregnancies are high-risk and demand a specialized level of care during both pregnancy and delivery. Other pregnancies may encounter unexpected problems. At birth, many of these babies require the care of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Frankfort Regional Medical Center is a highly specialized unit, providing care to neonates requiring specialized care. The unit's equipment and supplies are geared to the needs of these infants and the staff is specially trained. A multi-disciplinary approach of care is practiced.
The new four-bed Level II NICU enhances the existing nursery. The state-of-the-art nursery is staffed by board-certified neonatologists and registered nurses trained in advanced life support. Neonatologists doctors with specialized training in the care of newborns are on-site around the clock. Together with specially trained nursing staff and ancillary staff, they provide life-saving care and high-tech monitoring until babies are stable on their own. The NICU is equipped to deliver babies as young as 28 weeks, including those with respiratory and feeding difficulties or requiring antibiotic and IV therapy.
