The unique problem is that you was using a supercardioid in a bad position. Maybe with a cardioid mic like sm58 with the position that you was directing your mic you're not going to have problems with the captation of your mic.
I've the beta 58a too and is a great mic! Forget the feedback with this mic :) .

Sounds good. Show it to us. The Beta58a is 160 buck btw. Whatever this thingy is it sounds good especially for the price.
