what is LITHIUM?

LITHIUM is the most commonly used medication to treat bipolar disorder (manic depression). it has been most frequently and effectively used to control and prevent manic episodes in persons with bipolar disorder. Lithium has been successful in treating depression as well. In fact, the occurrence of depression in a person who has been taking lithium is often an indication that a higher dose is needed. In some cases, lithium is even a successful treatment for those with unipolar depression, or those who have never had a manic episode. Individuals who respond to lithium for depression are often those who have not responded to tricyclic antidepressants after several weeks of treatment. When given lithium in addition to their antidepressants, some of these people have shown significant improvement.

Lithium has also successfully treated schizophrenia in cases where there is a schizophrenic thought disorder accompanied by a change in mood that mimics either mania or depression. The similarity between people with this type of schizophrenia and those diagnosed with manic depression is their affective disorder--that is, the experience of strong emotions not related to what is happening in the environment. People with schizophrenia not experiencing an affective disorder will not likely respond to the combination of lithium and antipsychotic medication.

I was on lithium for many years, and it messed up my kidneys BAD! Dr weaned me off the drug to save my life. Lithium poisening is hellish!

@PodRacer012 if you do take lots of water with it, drink at least 8 glasses a day. I didn't like it cause it made me robotic.

@SuperFunandcrazy good point :D Bipolar is a way of life I guess haha. It's been a very long time since that post and to be honest i dont even know if im Bipolar anymore. I just take my resperidone everyday, and it works for me :D dont feel any mental disorder, its great :D Thanks for the comment man :D have a good one :) :) :) :D

@PodRacer012 dont worry i take it everyday for my bipolar and it is safe if you do EXACTLY wat the doc says! it is only dangerous if you take it at the wrong time or you take to much or something! but i you still dont want to take it, dont worry they cant force you to!

my doctor says i need to take the stuff. Im afraid that once i get off of it that my mood will be down and ill be sad. Also im afraid of it damaging my kidneys. All in all, i dont want to take this medication.
