http://WilmingtonThyroid.com. Dr. Alaimo discusses another trigger in Hashimoto's disease (hypothyroid). Vitamin D deficiency is common in 98% of patients suffering with autoimmune thyroid. The reason has to do with the defects in the receptor site for vitamin D. Typically, autoimmune patients need levels at 80-100. 910-251-1620. Wilmington, NC.

  • Thanks Doc! I suffer from hashimoto's and no doctor have ever mentioned about the vitaminin D definciency. Very interesting!!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

  • @yoguibenful Unfortunately, most traditional health care practitioners don't keep track of the latest research. This is a well known fact among researchers and progressive alternative health care prctitioners. You must have your 1,25 OH Vit D and your 25OH levels checked prior to initiating vitaminD therapy, since it is fat soluble and can be toxic if not properly administered and values monitored.

  • Dr Joe- Nice presentation. I love vitamin D and see numerous hashimotos patients. Knowing the autoimmune benefits of Vitamin D, it is a natural for assisting with Hashimotos and you did a very nice job tying these two together. Thanks for your valuable insight. • @zorropolo Thanks Doc, too many patients are not properly treated or managed with Vit D deficiency. Their practioners don't understand the hormonal nature and the immune regulatory effects of Vit D. We also utilize glutathione and superoxide dismutase ( liposomal delivery cream) and EFAs to help modulate regulatory T cells.

  • Problem with most Hashi patients is that they have absorption issues. We give emulsified Vit D with necessary co factors to ensure absorbability. Vit D needs to be closely monitored, as it can be toxic.

  • I'm Hashi for 12 yrs now and I just got a new Doctor who prescribed me 50,000 iu per wk for 8 wks to take..is it ok? Im really low evidently of Vitamin D

  • We recommend an emulsified Vit D with the necessary co-factors, DHA, EPA, Vit A,D,K. If it is emulsified, it will be easier to absorb since most Hashi patients have receptor site problems making it diffcult to get Vit D into the cells.

  • I've had Hashimoto's for 9yrs. My vitamin D is low even though I'm spend a good amount outdoors. I live in Australia so the scare for skin cancer has meant that I spent

a good many years covering up. Now I don't wear sunscreen or a hat just to soak up the vitamin D. I was wondering if I can get vit D from a solarium? would you recommend that as a treatment?

  • Thanks for this info Doc. Treatment of thyroid conditions, especially Hashimoto's, is so backwards. So any new info, like the link with insufficient Vit D levels, is great to know. I've started taking Cod Liver Oil capsules in hopes that it will help my Vit D levels.

  • Great question. Let me start by saying, I can't possibly diagnose you as Hashimotos, with just those facts. While an elevated TSH and critically low vitamin D, definately indicates hypothyroid, and 90-95% of hypothyroids are auto-immune (Hashimotos), further testing would be required to make a conclusive diagnosis. Patients that are Hashimotos, typically, are unresponsive to thyroid meds, have hypo and hyper thyroid symptoms, and have TSH that flucuates up and down. Hope that helps.

  • i have a vit d count of 10 and a tsh of 5.56 but dont know if it is hashimotos... any advice? thanks

  • You are very welcome. I am passionate about this topic and help many patients regain their lives. Don't believe the nay sayers, there is hope and we add value to patients lives every day. Ask your medical doctor if they can say the same??
