Maybe he had an itch? XD It can be very distracting, and the bass helps set the beat for the entire song. If the bass is off, it ruins the tempo, and naturally all the attention is on the vocalist, so if he had done it would draw too much attention. Also the drummer is just kinda... stuck there. XD
