This is the original version of the song made famous by Hendrix later. This is also the source for Frank Zappa's parody on the song as it appears on the "Only Money" album (Hey punk where r u going with this botton on your shirt" etc).Jim Pons is the bass player of this band, later to join "The Turtles", and later , with Eddie & Flo to the 70' version of the Mothers of Invention.

Of course, there clearly is no question, THIS is obviously the best version of this song. I don't care who else copied it.

The Byrds latched on to Dylans music and electrified it with the 12 tring Ric.

The Byrds had been on the Strip for 1-2 years when they bailed without notice when they got their contract. The owner brought in a garage band to fill in. The Byrds showed up to laugh and got blown away when the Leaves did this song live. They turned a sappy, beat-nik coffee house song into Rock n' Roll. History was made. I was there. I guarantee the Byrds version is a cover and tribute to the Leaves.

Everybody has had their say about the history of this song, best guitar players, etc. What most don't get is how hard it was to put on a show back then. One frayed cord, or a plug falling out of the wall and the entire show could go dark and/or lose sound. Of course they lip synced back then. The risks were too great to do otherwise. You try it with a couple of Fender Bassman amps and a Shure mike. It ain't as easy as it looks. Fact remains, the Byrds ALWAYS gave props to the Leaves for Hey Joe.
