Outstanding, I was at Sigonella in 1973. It was just a Naval Air Facility then. Been up on Mt Etna.

Very interesting! What was the exact date? I went up to watch on 11/11/2002 2:30 - 4:30pm approx by which time the road was clear of ash (fortunately!). I went with a guide and got to about 400 metres of the show. We were looking more or less due north (and perhaps a bit west) - Monte Frumente Supino on the left and the new cone to its right forming a saddle-shaped pass between them.

@Blascogeno Well, I guess that makes me an idiot too as I was there about the same time (11/11/2002) and I'm still here! Magnificent sight, especially on the way back down when the 'pillar of smoke' turned into to 'pillar of fire' (to quote the Biblical Book of Exodus)!
