From a song of desparation to a song of triumph! Just like Paul himself.

  • Thank you for sharing the alternative wording that Paul Robeson introduced after reflections on the original downtrodden verbage.

Mr. Robeson was the greatest civil rights activist the US has ever known and received nothing but disdain, persecution and alienation from a country who he tried to lead on to the correct path.

He also sought truth for African nations, Spanish Republicans against Franco and a host of others. Mr. Robeson was truly a great man.

  • Splendid! His voice, his indomitable spirit, courage, dignity and compassion - a towering human being! Didn't realize he had done this until your post - thank you so much

  • Not Paul Robeson!

  • wonderful. the greatest

  • There's a video of Robeson singing with these lyrics (with tremendous spirit) on youtube, but some heartless prat talks over the whole second verse! Very nice to hear it in full.

  • @Robertz1986 how little yu kow of mccarthyism,

  • @pogomcl

You have never been able to go to jail in the US for possession of a song... you may not have won any friends, but you wouldn't land in prison.

  • Prefer the origional wording . Only Paul Robeson could fill a theatre in the UK singing through a telephone wired up to a few speakers. They came to listen to the voice and to show their support , and my, what a voice.

  • The words "tired of living and scared of dying" reflected so much more pain than "I must keep fighting until I'm dying."

  • love the song, but prefer the original lyrics more

  • Listen, just listen - the voice -

    the applause at the end!

    Thanks, again -
