A recent Current Biology paper reported the defensive use of coconut shells by octopuses. This movie shows individuals extracting previously un-encountered coconut shells buried in the substrate, aided by jets of water to flush mud from shells; traveling considerable distances (up to 20 m) while carrying stacked coconut shell halves below their body, in a method of locomotion described as "stilt-walking"; and using the shells as protective cover.
