Le film a été tourné en partie dans l'ancien camp de Saliers (sur la commune d'Arles) où 700 Roms furent internés par le régime de Vichy entre 1942 et 1944. Il a également été tourné à la Baume sur les communes de Poulx et Sanilhac-Sagriès (Gard, France).

Saw this in 1954 when I was 16. The atmosphere in the cinema was incredible.

When they blew up the rock, blocking the road, you could have headrd a pin drop, i was so tense. Fantastic film that I've never forgotten.

No, no! The film shows a group of prisidiarios that to reduce time in prison, accept suicide missions to soften their sentences or to gain freedom. Take a load stricnina, explosive, to avoid an even greater tragedy in a poor village in south america.

I hope this clarifies, as I watched the movie in the 70s.
