60009 Union Of South Africa first arrived on the SVR in February 1989. Over the next 12 months it underwent a major overhaul, and began light engine running-in turns during early February 1990. In mid February 1990, 60009 hauled several trains that were opened up to the public,(the SVR didn't usually run any Winter service trains at the time)and many enthusiastic people took a trip behind the A4, including me.
60009 is seen here on 16th February 1990 climbing Eardington Bank and at Bridgnorth. It is also seen on 17th February climbing away from Sterns. 60009 remained based on the SVR until late 2006.

  • @shez5690 brilliant footage it can be equally good as that on dvds because you can be at the best locations and take time

  • I LOVE the A4 whistle, computer vibrated when No: 60009 started whistling!

  • It's great to see all this archive footage from the 80's and early 90's, most of which is un- repeatable!!
