We didn't get to train him when he was little because his mama was so protective. He hid behind her as much as possible for months. It wasn't until he was already several months old that we really started training him; my husband and I used a long, soft leadrope with one of us on each end, and forced him into a corner where he had to submit to our scratching, rubbing, and feeding him. He couldn't help but like it! Soon we put a halter on him but let him run around the small pen without demanding anything. It wasn't until he got injured that we really had to get close enough to put our healing oil on him twice a day. This really helped more than just his injury; it gave him the daily interaction that was needed. By the end of that time he was eating out of our hand and submitting to being scratched without being forced. I went out a couple of days ago, determined to put a halter on and get some training done, and not only did he allow me to halter him without going into "his corner" but worked without it-- when I discovered that he'd outgrown it! My husband calls this "Dancing with Horses."
