By openly saying "Okay, this really happened" I feel its anger and disgust. By telling myself "Okay, this didn't happen, its a story, its no big deal" it stays calm. So the choice is this... Feed its rage and disgust by saying "yeah, this happened" or keep myself under control by saying "Its a story". Which would you go with?
