A review of the laws regarding sales of alcohol in other states shows that 34 other states currently allow
grocery stores to sell wine. As noted, the existing law that regulates sales of alcoholic beverages in
Massachusetts prohibits any company from owning more than three licenses statewide. Only two of the
other 34 states that allow grocery stores to sell wine have a license quota system that gives certain
stores a virtual monopoly: South Dakota has a three-license limit and New Jersey has a two-license limit.

  • Pennsylvania has the BIGGEST monopoly in the U.S. on alcohol. Wine and liquor must be purchased in a State store (excepting wineries, they can sell their own product). No beer sales in supermarkets, either. So don't complain.
