This is an example of a compost heated shower, built by Geoff Lawton for the students of the Permaculture Research Institute's 10 week internship. The shower itself is a temporary setup while the student centre is being built but the water temperature is excellent and is almost too hot. It's been going for 3 weeks now without any sign of giving up and all completely free!

  • How long did the hot water last each shower? how long was the recharge time?

  • @gavoau you'd get a good 4 minutes with a 5 minute gap. It did vary as the weeks went on but was surprisingly consistent for such a low tech setup

  • @patrickblampied Consider this. The way I take a shower is...I rinse quickly with hot water...like less than a minute. Then I turn the water off and soap up. Then I turn it back on and rinse off. Shouldn't use up that much water and give you more than enough hot water.

  • @Cstrife234 Thats a good way to shower. I once saw a shower that recirculated the water after 2 mins to get rid of the dirtiest water and then recirculated the rest over and over so you can shower as long as you like. Interesting system, could work well if merged with a compost system, although complex and probably fairly unnecessary unless you like long showers!

  • cool... or whatever is an appropriate exclamation!

how to you make the compost heap? what is in it? do you stir it? does the juice get lost to the ground? what is the temperature of the water just before the heap?

  • is your hot water compost works?

  • Another thing to consider, Patrick, is to harvest the methane coming out of the pile. You can use it for natural gas to cook and for heating.
