SOUL CONVEYOR (PSYCHOPOMPUS)-Norman B-Deviations from the Norm

Put my toothbrush in my suitcase?
Well, I don't hafta pack it
Or dental floss or toothpaste
'Cause they're already in the pocket
Of my peacoat, old and tattered,
Or my faded-out jean jacket.
My world is made of Dozen Matter.
My car don't run. I don't hafta lock it.

I do an inventory before
I pass out through the door
Armed with my map
And compass
And no gas
And no grass,
Not high class
Nor pampas.

I will need no more
Attempted protection for
I'm ridin' ridin' ridin' glidin'
With the guidance
Of Psychopompus,
Ridin' ridin' ridin' glidin'
With the guidance
Of Psychopompus.

(p)(c)2009 Norman Schulerud Bie, Jr. All rights reserved. First performed live in 1986 & "87 at Strangers and Ground Zero (Tampa performance galleries), respectively. First broadcast in 1985 on WMNF 88.5 FM Tampa community radio.

Hermes, Mercury, Quicksilver (the FTD florist guy) is Psychopompus, the Soul Conveyor. In ancient Greek theology, when we die, Hermes of the winged sandals leads us to the land of the dead. This poem, though ostensibly dealing with a journey or a life, could also be seen as connoting the ultimate journey. Quicksilver's day is Miercoles/Wednesday, as he is identified with the Norse Odin. Hermes is the protector of us who live by our wits. Dozen Matter makes up the metaphysical universe, and one of those twelve powers protects you. For me, it is Mercury. As our guide to the other world, Psychopompus's name is applied to shamanic operations. Another name of Hermes is Argeiphontes. "Sweet Argeiphontes" the Homeric Hymn calls him. Be glad I don't tell you what Argeiphontes means.

This video was shot live on the Cool Shaman Common. (The name is often shortened to "Cushman Common," in Cushman, Massachusetts, near the Olde Cushman General Store. I am seen riding the Cushman Salamander, designed and constructed by artist John Sendelbach:

The salamander is a local totem. Cushman is the locaton of the REAL Salamander Crossing. Salam means Peace in Arabic. Ander means Man. Peace, man!
