Wiseau's direction for this scene pays homage to many of the greats. The angles and close-up shots are reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman's.
And the attention to background details reflects Kurosawa's work, Notice the two actors behind Johnny. Even though they are just extras, Wiseau has them acting out a detailed conversation.
